SOPA/PIPA/Megaupload

You know I understand on a business level why they've pulled the Megaupload crap today, and why in their principles SOPA/PIPA is a good idea, but seriously?

MU is basically used by fans, real fans, to share what they love with people who have a similar love. People who yes, might download something illegally, but from these people who does it really hurt? These are the same people who watch the download, then watch when it screens in their region, buy the DVD when it's released, buy the blu ray when they come along. Want to talk movies? I've dl'd movies that I've seen 15/20 times at the cinema and want to watch while I'm waiting for the DVD release. Music? I have every Garth Brooks CD, some of them I have three or four different versions of but I've downloaded because I've listened so much some of them that the actual discs are no longer viable.

So, corporate asshats, don't tell me and my fannish friends that we are ripping you off. You probably get more money from us then you would if we had less love for your product. Keep this shit up and you'll get nada, because we'll always find a way to share the love.

See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

1. Debts, Dates and Denials An Urban Ghost Story/Lost crossover of sorts by my bestie and beta alassenya . It was one of the first fics I read when I was dabbling my toes in the Lotrps fandom and whilst it's not Lotrps it was close enough for me. It has an incredibly simple yet complex cast of characters and well plotted storyline, and is still one of my favourite go to fics.

2. Hit the Ground Running by stellarmeadow was the first fic I read when I hit the Hawaii Five 0 fandom and I used to sweat on AO3/LJ daily waiting for another fic. I loved the way the story pretty much fit with the way I thought the start of the second season would go and loved the interactions with all the characters I had grown to love.

3. the Sound of the Ocean is Dead by portrait_of_a_fool is a masterpeice. I sobbed my way through it, I felt Steve's pain and his confusion, Danny's anger and his confusion at his inability to really help Steve was tangible. It's a hard fic to read but so very worth it.

I have only been writing in my current fandom, Hawaii Five-0, since June so I don't have much work to delve through, so I'm going to pluck some from my immediate past fandom which was Lord of the Rings RPS.

1. Hearing Your Song was my first attempt at a pairing that became very dear to me. Billy Boyd and his band Beecake have a mysterious fanboy. When Billy confronts the mysterious Orlando he discovers the taller man's secrets.

2. My own little labour of love is my Western Lover's series written within the LOTRps fandom. My particular favourite Cowboys and Biologists is almost 99k long and was my first experiment with the Ordaisy (Orlando Bloom/David Wenham) pairing. C & B is the story of David, a jaded warrior with a frozen heart and Orlando, a gentle nature loving biologist who is trying to save the lives of the Big Cats on the Double L Ranch. If you're inclined to read C & B, I'd recommend you start with Western Lovers: Cowboys and Archaeologists featuring Billy Boyd/Dominic Monaghan, it weighs in at just over 161k words, which is about average for the 8 volumes in the series. Soon there will be a volume featuring a ex soldier/photographer and a ranch hand named Alex and Scott respectively.

3. My favourite, so far, fic I have written in the Hawaii Five-0 fandom is Alone. It's a coda to episode 2.03, mainly because I think so much was left unwritten in the final scene. Steve has so many levels and so many layers to the emotions in that scene. Also I was chuffed that it inspired Not alone by alassenya

Happy New Year and Things

So, it's been a while *waves*.

I've been to Middle Earth, frolicked in The Shire, spent time in paradise (formerly known as Hawai'i) all with my best friend.

I've gone to the dark side. Yes my PC loving pals, I now am the proud owner of an iPad2 and an iPhone 4s (known at my house as Steve and Danny - because they're both very handsome, very clever and are a perfect match for each other). Am considering a MacBook as my next technology purchase. It seems my friends are right, I am distracted by the Shiny and Pretty.

Speaking of Technology,it is not my friend. Many of you know that already. As much as I love it, sometimes it beats me with it's big nasty stick of you will do what I want you to do or I will smite your trusting ass. Since I've been home I have managed to lose the power cable for Balian (my netbook that travels with me) so until Acer sends me a new one my Balian is currently on life support and inaccessible. My Isp has decided that it will work when it wants to and not when I need it to. Livejournal has decided that it is in a relationship with my ISP and has gone out in sympathy. I can acess LJ on Danny (aforementioned iPhone) but that gets me nowhere because I can't see graphics or comment or do anything well useful, and to top that all off my sister has somehow managed to put a password on my home/base system and I can't access much of my personal stuff until we work out wtf she did.

This year there are some changes afoot in my on line life.

Since LJ is kicking my ample toosh, I am trying this from a different angle. My otherwise unloved Dreamwidth account is now my jumping off point and I'll be cross posting to LJ from here.
