Something has been confuddling me for a while now. What exactly is it that allows us to suspend believability for somethings and not others.

And that was a confusing question, yes? Let me example for you.

I have yet to find something in H50 that has made me roll my eyes and get all thatsnotthefuckhowtheydothat about it. However, I have been known to stop watching somethings - Yes CSI it is you to whom I point that finger - because they do something that even with my limited knowledge is wildly outside the spheres of believeability.

Now I'm pretty sure that H50 is guilty of more truth stretching in the forensic/military stakes then many of the crime procedurals, why does it not bother me?

I'd like to say it's the boys and their delicious repartee or the scenery but I think it's more than that.

I'd like to say it's the boys and their delicious repartee At one time, I would have disputed this, because back in the day I though Greg was the cutest thing ever. But now that has kinda faded because wtf CSI, seriously -- letting them stay on cases where there's a conflict of interest, doing unrealistic things with technology, and losing all sense of continuity & character development?
I agree with you that it's easier to forgive H50 for most of their oversights though. For me, I don't know if it's because they actually give us lifelike characters we can relate to, the scenery, or the nonstop action, but whatever it is, I'm less inclined to eyeroll at the screen and think "yeah, right".

I can't put my finger on it. I know I actually note when something happens that dings my believability bell, but instead of it making me less tolerant it basically gets a mental shrug and carry on watching. the characterisation, the action, the location (I'm seriously a hawaii junkie) or a combination, but where it irks me in other things doesn't bother me at all.

This from a person who still can't watch Val Kilmer movies because he killed my Goose in Top Gun....

I've decided alot of it is based on character for me. I drifted away from CSI when they basically turned it into the Ray Langston Show; I wasn't really fond of him from his first guest spot, and from then on he just irked me when he had no solid characterization. On the flipside, I adore the entire Five-0 team, and they can get away with some stuff that's less than realistic as long as they stay in character. There's a possibility I'm willing to overlook some of it because I love Alex (and even Scott has grown on me), but can you really blame me?

See I came into fresh as far as the two leads were concerned. I knew that Grace was in BSG but had only seen a couple of eps (I bailed because I was a 70's BSG fan and couldn't cope with Starbuck and Boomer being female) and I had loved Daniel in Lost. I was in it wholey and soley for Hawaii, but somehow from the first tussel over the champ box the pair of them took over.

I had no clue who Grace was, although obviously I later found out what some of her previous roles had been. I knew from my dad that Kono had been male in the original Five-O, but aside from this show I don't think I've ever watched a remake/reboot of a series.

Jumping in here to say I LOVE THIS LINE and agree with the comment about Alex.

I started to watch H50 because of Alex (been a fan since Moonlight) but he's not the only reason why I'm watching anymore. I really do enjoy the whole team and they do seem to stay in character all of the time. So the little stuff that might come up from time to time I can overlook.
